If you’re googling quiet places to stay on the Isle of Skye, the road to Elgol is where to start reading.<\/span><\/p>

Thirteen miles, mostly single track, heading out from the village of Broadford. There\u2019s one way in and no way further, unless you’ve got a boat tied up at the pier. If not, don\u2019t worry as we have boat trips leaving almost everyday to Coruisk and surrounding small isles.<\/span>
<\/span>
<\/span>The road sweeps under <\/span>Bl\u00e0 Bheinn (Blaven)<\/span><\/a>, past the 15th-century ruin of Kilchrist church, along Loch Slapin for a while, then climbs, drops and ends at the stunning slipway in Elgol. The tarmac stops and the sea begins, with a view across the water to the incredible Cuillin Ridge. Coaches don’t come down this way, big crowds are nowhere to be seen. If you are the kind of person who loves to go on holiday to experience the truth of a place, something totally different from the nor – on Skye – Elgol is it.<\/span><\/p>

Coruisk House is the third house on the right as you arrive in the village. The perfect place to escape and still maintain the warmth and luxury of refined highland hospitality.<\/span><\/p>

Why people look for an uncrowded Skye in the first place<\/b><\/p>

Search terms like “quiet places to stay Isle of Skye” and “Skye accommodation away from crowds” run on something specific. Most people arrive on the island already tired. Not the holiday kind of tired. The other kind, the kind that builds up across a year of weeks that all look a bit the same, with too many open tabs on the laptop and a phone that buzzes in the night.<\/span><\/p>

What Skye is, for the person opening a browser tab at eleven on a Tuesday, isn’t the famous loop. It’s the idea of a landscape big enough to make a year’s workload disappear for a while. Three days of wilderness, mountains, lochs, ridges and water do a different kind of work than a long weekend in a city.<\/span>
<\/span>
<\/span>There are some things words can’t quite describe. Like the feeling of arriving into Elgol, somehow dropping all the worries of a busy life. Even after a few days, the visit feels longer, because time seems to lengthen, the rest in a place like Elgol feels deeper.<\/span><\/p>

Elgol can have an uplifting effect, if you’re prepared to drive the less driven roads to reach it.<\/span><\/p>

Guests don’t really fall into a single type. A couple whose phones haven’t had enough signal to cause disturbance. Walkers. Readers, with books to start and finish. Those looking to do nothing except watch the sunset at half seven in September turn mountains orange and red. What they have in common, if anything, is not much patience for queuing, and even less for being talked over at the next table.<\/span><\/p>

What they want from the island is, more or less, scale. A landscape big enough to make a year’s tally of email evaporate from the mind. A few days when being reached takes effort. Anonymous, but looked after.<\/span><\/p>

Thirteen miles that keep Elgol secret<\/b><\/h2>

Out of Broadford, you turn off the A87 onto the B8083 and keep going. The road drops down to Torrin on the shore of Loch Slapin, which has one caf\u00e9, Amy’s Place, well worth a stop for coffee and cake..<\/span><\/p>

The road resists being hurried. Thirteen miles of passing places, sometimes a stag at dusk on the road above Torrin, the highland cow cross, many sheep. If somebody’s coming the other way, one of you pulls in, and you end up doing the small mutual wave as you pass, which is the local etiquette and about the only reliable social contact on the route.<\/span><\/p>

Two things on the drive are worth stopping for, though plenty of people don’t realise until the second visit. Kilchrist church sits beside the road, roofless since the 1820s and the final resting place of a great many of the Clan MacKinnon, whose ancestors were given land in Elgol by Robert the Bruce. The gravestones and landscape are worth a pause, especially in low light. A mile further on, the road lifts above Loch Slapin under Bl\u00e0 Bheinn, and that’s a stop many pull over for, usually with a camera in hand.<\/span><\/p>

By the time guests get to the door of Coruisk, most of them have registered that they have arrived to a calmer, authentically natural world.<\/span><\/p>

The fire is often lit, the welcome is warm – drinks are offered – take the wait on your shoulders and sink into the chair.<\/span><\/p>

What “quiet” actually sounds like in Elgol<\/b><\/h2>

Quiet doesn’t mean silence, not here. What it means, in Elgol, is: wind on the roof when the wind is up, which is often. Sheep here, there and everywhere in the village. Oystercatchers down on the shore, doing whatever it is oystercatchers do at six in the morning. A boat engine starting at the pier. Rain on the window, cracks from the fire. Gaelic down on the harbour if you\u2019re really lucky.<\/span><\/p>

Mobile signal drops somewhere past Torrin. And we advise leaving your phone off until you’re on the drive home, which some people find a problem for an hour and then stop finding a problem at all.<\/span><\/p>

When to come if you want the place to yourself<\/b><\/h2>

April and May.<\/b> Light stretching out towards ten at night by the back end of May. Gorse blooming yellow along the Slapin road. Lambs everywhere above Torrin. The island is quieter than it will be in six weeks, though the water’s still cold if you’re thinking of swimming.<\/span><\/p>

June to August.<\/b> Busier. Even Elgol has more cars at the pier waiting for the <\/span>Misty Isle boat<\/span><\/a> across to <\/span>Loch Coruisk<\/span><\/a>. The restaurant’s still six tables. The walk down to the harbour still empties out by suppertime.<\/span><\/p>

September and October.<\/b> Often the best window on the whole island, certainly for anyone after a remote Skye holiday. Light lowers. Bl\u00e0 Bheinn goes copper on its west flank in the evenings. Stags on the hill behind the village, fewer people, warm-enough days, long nights by the fire.<\/span><\/p>

November to February.<\/b> An Nead<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Tigh Mairi<\/span>, the two <\/span>thatched cottages next door<\/span><\/a>, take <\/span>self-catering bookings right through the winter<\/span><\/a>, dog-friendly, fire set, often dark by four. That’s part of why people come. Light the fire and settle in for that show you\u2019ve been meaning to watch, or the book you\u2019ve had piled up to ready on the kindle.<\/span><\/p>

One restaurant, two minutes from Elgol harbour<\/b><\/h2>

The ingredients come from locals we have worked with for years.. Peter MacAskill grows mussels on rope in Loch Eishort, down at Sleat. David and Ben Oakes hand-dive for scallops off Sconser. Langoustines come in creels from the water between Elgol and Rum, some on the plate the same day, some the next. Ross MacRae stalks wild venison twenty miles inland at Edinbane. Ivor MacDonald raises lamb at Linicro Larder, up at the north end of the island. Clare bakes the bread. Iain cures the pancetta himself, from hogget mostly, sometimes mutton, with a lot of herbs.<\/span><\/p>

The <\/span>wine list runs to over fifty Burgundies<\/span><\/a>. Rh\u00f4nes, Clarets, a good Italian shelf. Iain’s been to a lot of the producers in person.<\/span><\/p>

Four rooms in the main house, not forty<\/span><\/p>

Four en-suite rooms upstairs<\/span><\/a>. Two doubles. Two suites, one of which is the <\/span>Upper Steading Suite<\/span><\/a> at the top of the house, which sleeps up to four.<\/span><\/p>

Next door are the two thatched cottages. An Nead takes three people, a king-size box bed plus a sofa bed plus a mezzanine, dog-friendly, two-night minimum, from \u00a3230 a night. <\/span>Tigh Mairi<\/span><\/a>‘s the second. For <\/span>full-house bookings<\/span><\/a> the whole place goes out as seven en-suite king bedrooms, up to fourteen guests.<\/span><\/p>

Check-in four. Check-out half past ten. Under-14s stay in the cottages rather than the main house, unless you’ve taken the whole place for the family.<\/span><\/p>
