Three villages often come up on Isle of Skye itineraries as places to stay on Skye. Portree in the middle-north for its centrality. Broadford in the south-east around 7 mins from the Skye Bridge. Elgol at the end of the road out of Broadford, facing the Cuillin for its ‘Best in Scotland’ views and wilderness.
Each is not really ‘competing’ for the same guest, though every year people arrive in one of them assuming it is interchangeable with the others, only to find it is not quite so simple.
This is a practical guide for readers trying to decide between Elgol, Portree and Broadford as a base on Skye. Coruisk House is in Elgol, so take the tilt of the author as given. The rest is facts.
Portree is the island’s main town. It has the pubs, the harbour with the painted houses, the supermarket, the bank, the bus stops, the pavements. It is where you stay if you want a town. None of these is better or worse. They are different places, and depending on what you are coming for are perfectly suited to each kind of guest.
Portree is the island capital, of about 2,500 people, on the east coast of Trotternish. The harbour frontage with the painted terrace is the most photographed short stretch of Skye, and for good reason. It is also where every coach day-tour from Inverness pauses for lunch, where cruise ships pull in for a few hours and offload guests onto coaches, Portree centre is a busy place. The town thins out in the evening, but tables at restaurants can be hard to come by if you are not prepared.
If you want shops, restaurants within walking distance of your room, a bus to anywhere else on the island, a pharmacy, and the feel of being in a place with pavements and streetlights, Portree is the answer. Families with small children often do better here. So do travellers without a car.
Broadford is the second-largest settlement, dotted along the A87 where the main road hits the island’s east coast. It has the Co-op, the petrol station, a couple of restaurants, and a spread of bed and breakfasts and small hotels up the side roads. It is functional. It is perhaps a little flatter than you might expect for Skye.
For a traveller using Skye as one stop in a longer trip, Broadford makes sense. You are fifteen minutes from the Skye Bridge, thirty from the Armadale ferry to Mallaig, and roughly 45 mins from Portree. You can cover the island from here on day trips. You are also close to the south: Elgol is thirteen miles south west.
The limitation is that many accommodations sleep on a main road. Lorries and campervans use the A87 sometimes relentlessly.
Elgol sits on a shoulder of the Strathaird peninsula, thirteen miles south of Broadford. The road is single-track for eleven of those miles. You meet fewer than a hundred cars a day on most of it.
The village has a primary school, the slipway where the Misty Isle and Bella Jane and AquaXplore boats go out to Loch Coruisk and the Small Isles, a small beach, and a few houses.
The MacKinnon family have run boats from the pier since 1969 and lived in the area since the 1300s. Puffins breed on the cliffs at Canna, a twenty-minute RIB ride offshore between April and July. Creel-caught langoustines are landed at the pier most mornings. The shore looks straight into the horseshoe of the Cuillin, which is why Elgol has been on the list of serious landscape photographers since Victorian plate cameras.
What Elgol does not have: a grocery store, cash machine, petrol station, bus stop within walking distance, or reliable mobile signal. Download your maps before you arrive. Bring everything you expect to need. Coruisk House is the third building on the right as you come into the village. Four rooms in the main house, two thatched self-catering cottages next door, a four-course dinner at seven for and a wine list even the most expert wine drinker will enjoy.
A group of friends on their first Scotland trip who want to race round Storr, the Quiraing and Neist Point plus a restaurant every night: Portree.
A family using Skye as one leg of a longer Highland circuit, with a hire car and a plan to move on after one night: Broadford. It’s on the road and things close to it.
A couple or a small group who are looking for authenticity, romance, want to slow down, want dinner to be the event of the day, and want the Cuillin nearby: Elgol.
A large party for a private celebration: worth knowing that the whole of Coruisk House (seven en-suite king bedrooms, the dining room and the two cottages) can be booked as a whole-property takeover for up to fourteen guests.
If what you actually want is a small village at the end of a single-track road with a view of the Cuillin from the harbour and dinner cooked by one person with six tables of guests: that is Elgol, and Coruisk House is where to book.
Dinner at Coruisk House is by reservation, 1 March to 30 October.
